Duckworth, Durbin Announce $2.5M in Federal Funding for Improved Infrastructure in Du Quoin

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) Thursday announced $2,529,000 in federal funding to the City of Du Quoin for the extraction and relocation of utility lines under Hickory Street, a project that the town has worked toward for years. Thursday’s federal investment which comes through the Delta Regional Authority’s (DRA) Community Infrastructure Fund (CIF) covers over half of the cost of this project that will help the town to improve their water infrastructure.

“Today’s (Thursday’s) announcement will help ensure Du Quoin has the resources needed to work toward completing this crucial water infrastructure project, while also creating good-paying, local jobs in the community,” Duckworth said. “I’m proud to have worked alongside Mayor Downs in supporting this initiative, and I will continue working to secure investments that help us rebuild infrastructure in Southern Illinois and all across our state.”

“This investment not only addresses the immediate needs of Du Quoin, but it also will foster the opportunity for economic growth,” said Durbin. “By modernizing Du Quoin’s infrastructure, we’re laying the foundation for revitalization, job creation, and heightened connectivity.”

“I want to thank Senators Durbin and Duckworth for their support of our grant application with DRA in the amount of $2,529,000,” said Du Quoin Mayor Josh Downs. “Without their strong, public support I’m not sure if we would have received this money. I, along with our city council and staff, are eternally grateful for this funding, as it accounts for well over 50% of the total projected cost. This project will strengthen our infrastructure for decades to come and allow for future economic development, positioning Du Quoin to offer expanded growth opportunities for businesses.”

These federal funds for the Hickory Street Utility Relocation project will help the City relocate 2,300 linear feet of 6-inch water main, 2,200 linear feet of 8-inch sanitary sewer pipe and 1,200 linear feet of 14-inch water main.
