MT. VERNON – Attorneys in the case against 57-year-old Frederick Goss will meet today to discuss final motions leading up to Tuesday’s trial charging Goss with disarming and attempting to shoot a correctional officer.
Jefferson County Assistant State’s Attorney Julie Kozuszek and Defense attorney Neal Heflin will argue this afternoon a state motion seeking to restrain the defendant, along with motions regarding evidence to be presented at this week’s trial.
Judge Thomas J. Tedeschi warned defendant Fred Goss in court Friday that his right to be present in court is not absolute and that outbursts disrupting the trial will result in his removal from the courtroom.
Goss reportedly became disruptive and profane during an earlier pretrial hearing in the case, questioning the court and repeatedly interrupting his own counsel.
He requested a different attorney be appointed Friday in court, however, Judge Tedeschi denied that request after Goss declined to represent himself.
Goss is already serving a prison sentence for armed robbery and for shooting at a Mt. Vernon police officer. He’s accused in the new case of disarming the Jefferson County Correctional Officer transporting him back from lunch, then firing the officer’s own weapon at him.
