JURORS DELIBERATING FATE OF MT. VERNON MAN ACCUSED OF MURDERING HIS FATHER IN MAY 2020

MT. VERNON – Jurors on Monday began deliberating the 2020 Jefferson County case of a 31-year-old Mt. Vernon man accused of murdering his father.

Traviel Gibson is charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count Class 2 felony robbery in connection with the shooting death last May 13 of his father Sam Joseph Gibson, III.

Gibson has remained in the Jefferson County Jail since his May 2020 arrest. He appeared in court in street clothes and without restraints for the trial that opened last Wednesday.

According to Mt. Vernon Police, on the afternoon of May 13, 2020, a distraught woman entered the police department lobby and reported a man had possibly been shot at a home in the 1800 block of Cherry in Mt. Vernon.

She also reported another man at the home had attacked her and stolen her phone.

Officers reported that as they arrived at the home they witnessed Gibson run into the home where they saw a dead man on the front porch of the home.

Despite several commands from officers, Gibson refused to cooperate and come out of the home.

Officers ultimately entered the home to make contact with Gibson, who reportedly continued to resist officers resulting in one officer suffering minor injuries when taking him into custody.

According to Jefferson County State’s Attorney Sean Featherstun, jurors were still awaiting exhibits early Monday afternoon to begin deliberating the case.
