Severin Slams Redistricting Proposal Passed By Illinois House

State Representative Dave Severin is pushing back after Illinois House Democrats approved a plan to change how legislative maps are drawn. Speaking from Springfield, Severin called House Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 28 an attempt to protect political power rather than improve fairness. Severin argues the proposal weakens long-standing requirements for compact and equal districts, opening the door to more gerrymandering. He also pointed to past criticism of Illinois maps, including failing grades from watchdog groups. The Republican lawmaker says a better option—creating a bipartisan commission through a separate proposal—continues to be ignored, adding the latest move allows politicians to choose their voters instead of the other way around.
