Salvation Army Kicks Off Two Friendly Fundraising Contests

MARION – The Salvation Army of Southern Illinois is kicking off the Christmas season with two exciting fundraising challenges designed to bring communities together—all while supporting families in need throughout Southern Illinois.

“We are grateful to have the support of local banks and community leaders that believe in our mission to do the most good without discrimination,” said Darla Harms, Associate Director, “The money raised will help continue our legacy of helping local residents with food, rent and utility assistance, disaster relief and other important services.”

Competition #1 — Battle of the Banks

Legence Bank, First Southern Bank, and Bank of Herrin are facing off in a head-to-head kettle competition. Each bank will host a Red Kettle to collect cash, checks, and coins, and will also promote their own online donation page where supporters can give using credit or debit cards.

The competition runs Dec. 1–23, and supporters are encouraged to give through their bank of choice using the links below:

Totals will be updated weekly until the end of the competition.

Competition #2 — Mayors’ Bell-Ringing Challenge

Three local mayors will step behind the kettles and ring bells for two hours to battle for the top fundraiser title and local bragging rights:

Mayor Absher, Marion — Dec. 5, 1–3 p.m., Marion Kroger

Mayor McPeek, Harrisburg — Dec. 6, 1–3 p.m., Harrisburg Kroger

Mayor Harvey, Carbondale — Dec. 13, 11 a.m.–1 p.m., Carbondale Kroger

Southern Illinois residents are encouraged to show up and support their local mayor with cash, check, and change donations.

The bank and mayor with the highest fundraising total will receive a commemorative plaque—along with well-earned bragging rights across Southern Illinois.
