CHRISTOPHER – Michael “Mike” W. Deaton of Christopher departed his earthly life suddenly on Nov. 3, 2025, at his home. He was born in Marion, Illinois, to George and Mary Jane (Webster) Deaton.
Mike was a graduate of Southern Illinois University, where he earned a degree in Accounting and attended on a golf scholarship. He worked for Old Ben Coal and most recently for Delta as an accountant. An avid golfer, Mike was well known throughout Southern Illinois for his exceptional talent. He was a former member of the West Frankfort Country Club and Kokopelli Country Club and was a member of the First Christian Church of Christopher.
Mike was a friend to many and a true “get-it-done” kind of guy—always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Debbie; his beloved children, Stephanie Deaton and Brent King of St. Louis, Missouri; and a special nephew who was like a son, Doug Deaton and his wife, Chandler Short Deaton, along with their children, Sawyer Gray and Knox Wilder Deaton. He is also survived by his brother, Gregory Mark Deaton of Marion, Illinois; sister-in-law Melinda Deaton; nieces Jessica Deaton, Chelsea (Chris) Duty of Marion, and Kelly (husband) Cameron; and several great-nieces and nephews. Holding a very special place in his heart were his brother- and sister-in-law, Melissa and Steve Michaels of Murphysboro, Illinois.
Mike will also be missed by his adored pets, Maggie, Tess, and Poppy—and by Reacher, who knew him as “Poppy.”
A Celebration of Life will be held on Nov. 22 at 4 p.m. at 618 Taphouse in Marion, Illinois.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Polar Plunge 2026 (in memory of his brother’s charity), St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or the Franklin County Animal Shelter in Benton, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Jane (Webster) Deaton; his in-laws, Dick and Betty Ingram; his brother, Douglas Kent Deaton; and sister-in-law, Kitty Deaton.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Christopher Chief of Police Andy Trogola, Officer Stacey Sperling, Fire Chief John Taylor, and all of the paramedics and EMTs from Christopher and Coello. Your comfort and support during our darkest moments will never be forgotten.
A special thank you also goes to our many friends and neighbors for their flowers, food, visits, calls, and love during this time of grief. We will forever be grateful.
