Shawnee Community College Announces Workshop to Assist Diverse Populations

ULLIN – Shawnee Community College Workforce Development will hold an all-day training event, Communication Strategies for Diverse Abilities, on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Zion Evangelical Church in Metropolis.

The interactive workshop will be facilitated by Hadley Stephens, founder of Rolling in Faith, and Kayla Etheridge, American Sign Language Instructor. Together, they will guide participants through strategies to build stronger communication skills for engaging with individuals of all abilities.

Attendees will gain:

  • Introductory experience in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Practical techniques for communicating with people who are Deaf or hard of hearing
  • Respectful approaches for engaging with individuals with intellectual or physical disabilities

“This workshop is designed for individuals and businesses who want to improve their communication skills and create more inclusive spaces,” said Melissa Luttenbacher, Director of Shawnee Community College Workforce Development. “Participants will leave with practical tools they can immediately apply in their workplaces and communities.”

The cost of the event is $25 per participant. Registration is available online.
