Man Charged in Violent Metropolis Home Invasion

METROPOLIS – A Metropolis man was recently arrested and charged with Home Invasion, Aggravated Battery and Aggravated Assault after he struck the victim three times in the head with a baseball bat while sleeping in the living room and was shot at twice by the offender but missed at a home in the 1800 block of Ferry.

Metropolis Police say the victim identified 65-year-old James H. Smith as the offender and learned he lived at Humma’s Apartments.

Surveillance was set up while search warrants were being obtained. Smith was seen leaving the complex and taken into custody. Once the search warrant was executed, officers located the bat as well as ammunition matching the casing found at the scene.

Smith was booked into the Massac County Detention Center for his offenses.
