Two Suffer Gunshot Wounds in Sunday Shooting in Carterville

MARION – The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office Monday afternoon released more information regarding that Sunday morning shooting in Carterville.

Carterville Police responded to a report of shots fired in the 600 block of Grand Avenue around 11 a.m.

A subsequent investigation has determined that an adult resident of the household was in possession of a 9mm handgun.

While handling the firearm, an accidental discharge occurred resulting in a 16-year-old resident suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg.

The adult, identified as Koby B. Childers, was later discovered to have a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Childers was stabilized at an area hospital and later airlifted to a regional trauma center where he remains in critical condition.

This is not a random act of violence and there is no further threat to public safety.

Authorities are investigating mental health as a contributing factor in this investigation.

The Carterville Police Department is being assisted by the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office and Illinois State Police Crime Scene (CSI).

This remains an ongoing investigation.
