SPRINGFIELD – Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs awarded Carbondale Mayor Carolin Harvey with the Outstanding Commitment as an Elected Official award during a celebration commemorating Black History Month and to honor leaders from the African-American community Wednesday in Springfield.
The event was an opportunity to reflect on the great achievements of Black leaders.
Harvey was one of eight downstate honorees receiving an award. She was elected as Carbondale’s first Black mayor in April 2023 and was elected to the City Council three times. She was also a member and chair of the Carbondale Planning Commission for several years.
During her remarks, Harvey thanked Lynne Chambers for nominating her for the award, her family for their support and her parents.
