MCLEANSBORO – You can now add McLeansboro to the list of southern Illinois cities banning the sale and delivery of Kratom within the city limits.
The City Council earlier this week unanimously passed an ordinance banning the substance after becoming aware of certain related incidents involving it.
Anyone found violating the ordinance will face a fine not exceeding $750 for each offense.
Kratom comes from a tropical tree native to southeast Asia and is known for its stimulant and sedative effects. It is commonly consumed as a tablet, capsule, or extract mixed into liquids. It’s available at local gas stations and convenience stores.
Kratom remains unregulated and poses significant health risks including death. The FDA has not approved Kratom, which has been banned in several states due to its dangerous effects.
Cobden, Eldorado, Herrin, Marion and Johnston City have also enacted Kratom bans.
