Bicyclist Dies after Being Hit by Vehicle in Makanda

MAKANDA – A bicyclist was killed after being stuck by a vehicle Monday night in Makanda according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say 49-year-old Elvira Muckelroy of Makanda was driving a silver 2015 Toyota crossover south on Old Highway 51 in the area of Cedar Creek Road when the vehicle collided with the bicyclist on the roadway.

The bicyclist was injured, and despite lifesaving efforts by the Jackson County Ambulance Service, the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jackson County Coroner’s Office. Their name has not been released at this time.

Traffic on Old Highway 51 was closed and redirected for two hours until the roadway could be cleared.

The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the crash.
