CARBONDALE – Two girls were arrested on various charges following a reported disturbance Friday afternoon at Carbondale Community High School.
Police say the disturbance was related to a prior dispute among three juvenile acquaintances. School staff and a School Resource Officer attempted to deescalate the situation, intervening with two juveniles who had been identified as the aggressors.
During the incident, a 15-year-old Carbondale girl was arrested for Resisting Arrest, Criminal Trespass, Criminal Damage to State-Supported Property, and Aggravated Battery to a peace officer. A 16-year-old Carbondale girl was also arrested for Resisting Arrest and Criminal Trespass.
After consulting with the Jackson County States Attorney’s Office, both girls were cleared to be detained in a juvenile detention facility pending a court appearance; however, no space was available in the regional juvenile detention facilities. The juveniles were ultimately released to family members pending a court appearance. No one was injured. There was no threat to students, staff or the public. The high school activated security procedures as a precaution. Police continue to investigate.
