CARTERVILLE (JALC NEWS) – Dr. Kirk Overstreet, President of John A. Logan College, has been appointed Chair of the Board of Directors for Artspace 304, a leading cultural institution in Southern Illinois with a longstanding commitment to supporting regional artists and fostering community engagement through the arts.

Dr. Overstreet’s appointment marks a new chapter for Artspace 304, which has served as a cornerstone of the creative landscape of Carbondale and southern Illinois since its founding in 1987 as Carbondale Community Arts. With deep ties to education and public service, Dr. Overstreet brings a wealth of experience in academic leadership and community development to the role.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Overstreet as Board Chair,” said Chuck Benya, Artspace 304’s CEO and Executive Director. “His vision and dedication to education, access, and community growth align perfectly with our mission to nurture creative talent and provide meaningful cultural opportunities for all of the region.”
Artspace 304’s Board of Directors will hold a special Meet and Greet with Dr. Overstreet on Monday, September 15, at Art Space 304 located at 304 West Walnut St in Carbondale. The event will have light hors d’oeuvres and bring together community leaders, partners, merchants, artists, creators, donors, and supporters to celebrate the future of Artspace 304 and its continued impact on the region. Those interested in attending the Meet and Greet should RSVP to Artspace at 618-457-5100 by Monday, September 8.
Located in a distinctive mid-century modern building, formerly the Carbondale city library, Artspace 304 offers a vibrant space for art exhibitions, film screenings, media lectures, and community events. The organization is deeply committed to promoting equity in the arts, supporting both established and emerging artists, and reflecting the cultural diversity of the region.
Under Dr. Overstreet’s leadership, Artspace 304 aims to strengthen its educational programs and expand access to arts resources. This includes continuing its robust support for youth through its annual summer camp, youth group exhibition, and various initiatives aimed at cultivating the next generation of artists.
Since its inception, Artspace 304 has awarded over $500,000 in grants and aid to support creative endeavors across the Greater Carbondale area. With Dr. Overstreet at the helm, the organization looks to build on that legacy and further its impact throughout Southern Illinois.
“As an educator and advocate for the arts, I’m honored to help guide the future of Artspace 304,” said Dr. Overstreet. “The arts are essential to the vitality of our communities, and I look forward to working with the board and staff to ensure that everyone in our region has the opportunity to engage, create, and be inspired.”
Artspace 304 continues to serve as a cultural anchor in downtown Carbondale, striving to educate, cultivate, and promote local artistry—one exhibition, workshop, and performance at a time.
