Marion Felon with Chicago Gang Ties Faces Gun and Drug Charges after Traffic Stop

MARION – A Marion man known to be a convicted felon and who has an active caution alert identifying him as a member of a Chicago street gang is facing gun and drug charges following a traffic stop Saturday afternoon at the intersection of Boyton and Court streets in Marion.

According to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, the driver, 51-year-old Shirley J. Hamilton of Harrisburg, and her passenger, 49-year-old Petre D. Washington of Marion, were stopped for disobeying a traffic signal.

The pair were removed from the vehicle and a lawful search was done. A loaded handgun magazine was recovered from the vehicle. A 9mm handgun was also found beneath Washington’s clothing when he was searched. He was also found with several plastic baggies containing controlled substances.

As deputies were loading Washington into a patrol vehicle, Hamilton tried to distract, interfere and obstruct them. She was cited for Disobeying a Traffic Signal and ordered to leave the scene.

Washington is lodged in the Williamson County Jail cited for Armed Habitual Criminal, Unlawful Use or Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, Aggravated Unlawful  Use of a Weapon, and two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance.
