WEST CITY – West City Police and the Franklin County Housing Authority have honored two citizens with the Outstanding Citizens Award for acts of bravery on May 9, 2025.

An electrical fire was reported that day in the 300 block of South Browning Street. West City Police and Fire, along with the Benton Fire Department, responded. The fire started on the first story and spread to the second story, where a 2-year-old child was sleeping.

Residents Kenny Benedict and John Nalley heard smoke alarms sounding and the resident at the window yelling for help, as she could not get down the stairs due to heavy smoke.
The two men, along with West City Police Officer James Pritchard, were able to get the child and the mother out of the second-story window to safety. They were taken to Franklin Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and later released.
