AmeriCorps Seniors Workforce Program Launches in Jackson and Williamson Counties

JACKSON/WILLIAMSON COUNTY – The HAP Foundation announced the launch of the AmeriCorps Seniors Workforce program today in Jackson and Williamson counties. Active recruitment is occurring for U.S. citizens, aged 55 and older living in Jackson or Williamson County to participate in the program. In addition, we are looking for organizations to participate as host sites, where individuals can do their on-the-job training

“We are excited to support seniors in Jackson and Williamson Counties as they re-enter the workforce through our AmeriCorps Seniors Workforce Program,” said Joseph Matty, President, The HAP Foundation. “HAP is committed to strengthening the existing community by engaging people in southern Illinois to share resources with their neighbors. Our goal is to provide better health outcomes across this region.”

HAP’s AmeriCorps Seniors Workforce program will train individuals to be Community Health Workers, which is a public health worker who has a deep understanding of the community served. This program seeks people who demonstrate compassion, empathy for others, and enjoy connecting resources to promote a healthy lifestyle. Interested individuals are encouraged to apply by August 18, 2025. Participants will receive at least 40 hours of training in nationally recognized core competencies to become a Community Health Worker in partnership with the Illinois Public Health Association. Also, job training will be provided through community organizations. The program will begin on September 30th at John A. Logan College in Carterville. Participants must commit to 10 hours a week. Volunteers have the opportunity to earn up to $1,400 during the six-month program.

In addition, HAP is seeking community organizations to serve as host sites, where participants can complete their on-the-job training. Host sites must provide services that support community well-being, such as connecting individuals with educational or health resources. Since last year, HAP’s AmeriCorps Seniors program has been implemented in Peoria, Sangamon, and Macon Counties with a total of 28 volunteers. In July 2023, The HAP Foundation announced its AmeriCorps Seniors Workforce Development Program to support senior volunteers in their communities. AmeriCorps is a federal agency for national service and volunteerism that provides opportunities for Americans of all backgrounds to serve their country, address the nation’s most pressing challenges, and improve lives and communities.
