MURPHYSBORO – The City of Murphysboro is inviting residents to an Open House on Tuesday, Aug. 26, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., to review plans for a proposed new Police-Fire Station and City Hall. The event will also give residents a chance to see ongoing issues with the current facility, which was built in 1957.
The City Council will meet immediately following the Open House and is encouraging public feedback on the project. The new facility is expected to cost between $13 and $14 million.
Murphysboro has been working with FGM Architects, the firm hired to lead the city through the planning and design process.

The proposed location for the new building is the current police-fire station site, which will be expanded south to Locust Street, including the property that formerly housed Spears Vision Center. The city owns that property and plans to demolish it as part of the project.
Some of the problems with the current building include flooding in the basement, lack of a sally port for police, limited space in the Council Chamber, insufficient room for fire equipment and it wasn’t built with modern technology in mind.
