Marion Police Announce K-9 Zara’s Retirement

MARION – After 10 years of service, Marion Police K-9 Zara is retiring.

At Monday night’s Marion City Council meeting, Sgt. Daniel Ogden spoke about his partner, Zara, who is an 11-year-old Belgian Malinois, and the time they served together, which began six years ago in May 2019 after another officer paired with Zara left the department. During her time with Marion Police, Zara worked in narcotics and on patrol according to Ogden.

Ogden says it’s been difficult watching Zara slow down over the past year knowing it was time for her to call it quits. Ogden is hopeful that Zara will find a new purpose as “a lazy house dog” and enjoys her family time.

As for Zara’s replacement, Ogden says he will be going to back next month to Vohne Liche Kennels in Denver, IN, on Aug. 18 to select a new dog and start the process all over again. Zara also came from that kennel in 2016.

The McCabe Family Foundation presented a check to the Marion Police Department at Monday’s meeting to pay for the new dog and send Ogden to training.
