MT. VERNON – An apartment fire Tuesday night in Mt. Vernon claimed one life and injured another.
According to the Mt. Vernon Fire Department, firefighters with help from the Jefferson County Fire Protection District, were sent to the fire at 504 Short Street Apartments at 7:25 p.m.
A working fire in an apartment was found when firefighters arrived. A search for victims began.
Firefighters went through a window and found one victim. They were removed through the window. A second victim was found and removed through the front door. The fire was put out.
The victims were taken to Deaconess and Good Samaritan hospitals in Mt. Vernon. One victim died afterwards. The second victim was taken to a St. Louis burn center.
