Carterville Traffic Stop Nets Two Felons on Drug, Gun Charges

CARTERVILLE – A recent traffic stop in Williamson County led to the arrest of two convicted felons on drug and gun charges.

According to the sheriff’s office, the driver, Justus J. Poole, and his passenger, Shawn M. Shreves, are charged with Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Possession of Stolen Property, Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Illegal Transportation of Alcohol. Poole was also charged with Expired Registration. They were both booked into the county jail.

During the early morning hours of June 6, deputies stopped the vehicle both men were in for expired registration near the intersection of Greenbriar Road and Illinois 13. Deputies also saw an uncased firearm inside. Both men were removed from the vehicle, and an investigation by deputies revealed they were both convicted felons and were not allowed to have guns.

Additional deputies and officers from the Carterville and Crainville police departments help deputies find inside the vehicle a Hi-Point 9mm semi-automatic rifle – that was reported stolen – and an Aero Precision 5.56 Nato semi-automatic rifle loaded, but not reported stolen.

Deputies also found open containers of alcohol and a glass smoking pipe which later field tested positive for meth.
