SOUTHERN ILLINOIS – Today is the first day of summer and it’s bringing the first heat wave of the season to us.
A prolonged period of dangerous heat and humidity will begin tomorrow and continue through at least Tuesday.
The National Weather Service in Paducah says peak heat index values of 100 to 108 are expected each day, and there will be very little relief at night.

A Heat Advisory is in effect from noon tomorrow to 7 p.m. Tuesday for the entire region.
Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses.
So what should you do to stay safe during this heat wave?
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Take care of your pets if you can’t bring them inside out of the heat. Do not leave your kids or pets in your vehicle because interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing if you have to be outdoors. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
