Protect Yourself during Dangerous Heat Wave Starting Saturday

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS – As you have probably heard by now, our region will be in a dangerous heat wave Saturday through Wednesday.

The heat index will run anywhere from 100 to 107 with our highs in the lower to mid-90s according to the National Weather Service in Paducah.

Heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke can happen during very hot weather.

Signs of heat exhaustion include dizziness, thirst, heavy sweating, nausea and weakness. If you experience any of these symptoms, move to a cooler area, wear loose fitting clothing, sip cool water and seek medical help if you don’t improve. Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke.

Signs of heat stroke include confusion, dizziness and becoming unconscious. It can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not given.

If someone experiences heat stroke, move them to a cooler area, loosen their clothing and remove extra layers and cool with water or ice.

So what can you do to keep yourself safe during this heat wave?

Be informed. Limit your outdoor activity and stay out of the sun. Stay hydrated. Stay in an air-conditioned room. Check on others and your animals. Do not leave your kids or pets in your vehicle because interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

By the way, summer officially starts Friday at 9:42 p.m.
