ELKVILLE – A crash involving a semi and a car happened just before 10:30 Monday morning at the intersection of U.S. 51 and Truax Traer Road south of Elkville.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, 37-year-old Samuel Baumgarte of Grand Tower, was driving his semi north on U.S. 51 when a car going south crossed over into the northbound lane. Baumgarte veered the semi to the right to avoid the car but was not successful. After the collision the semi went into a ditch and overturned. The car caught fire with the driver inside. The driver died at the scene. The Jackson County Coroner arrived. The victim’s name is being withheld until family members are notified. An ambulance took Baumgarte to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Traffic on U.S. 51 was closed and redirected for five hours until the roadway could be cleared.
