Man Arrested for Detonating ‘Homemade Firework’ in McLeansboro

MCLEANSBORO – McLeansboro Police responded to an explosion near the 200 block of North Locust Street around 11:20 Thursday morning.

When police arrived, they found a man had detonated an improvised explosive device that he described as a “homemade firework” leaving an 18-inch crater in the ditch in front of the subject’s home.

Upon further investigation it was discovered that there were a large number of undetonated items still present at the home.

The Illinois Secretary of State Bomb Squad was contacted and responded to the scene. While conducting a search warrant, all items of potential explosive hazard were confiscated.

This is an ongoing investigation and after the conclusion, information will be forwarded to the Hamilton County State’s Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
