MT. VERNON – Mt. Vernon residents are receiving opt-out notices for the city’s electric aggregation program.
According to a city press release, the city has received some questions and would like to share more information to help clarify how the program works.
This program pools the community’s electricity demand so the city can negotiate lower electric rates from suppliers. Residents are automatically included unless they choose to opt out, which helps secure better pricing for everyone.
In 2013, voters approved a referendum allowing the city to do this on residents’ behalf. You’re automatically enrolled unless you choose to opt out. Participation is not mandatory — it’s your choice.
The new rate takes effect June 1. Some residents are seeing a rate of about $0.08 on their current Ameren bill, while the current aggregation rate is around $0.09. Both rates will increase beginning in June.
