The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says after deputies arrived, they found 19-year-old Chance G. Cruise with a gun and shot it several times at the back of the home. Cruise then barricaded himself inside his home and did not respond to deputies order to come out.

Mt. Vernon Police and Illinois State Police responded to help. Sheriff’s office detectives and the Mt. Vernon Police Department/Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office High Risk Team also responded to the scene.

A perimeter was established and continued efforts to communicate with Cruise via cell phone, social media, and public address system failed.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for the home and it was executed. HRT members breached the front door, flew a drone inside, and located Cruise. After contact was made, Cruise began cooperating and surrendered without any further incident to members of the High-Risk Team. Detectives searched the home and collected evidence associated with the investigation.
