Man Wanted on Warrant Arrested at Crossville Traffic Stop

CROSSVILLE – A Crossville man wanted on a White County warrant was arrested by the White County Sheriff’s Office early Thursday morning.

According to the sheriff’s office, around 1:30 a.m., a deputy saw 36-year-old Matthew Gwaltney riding a bike on North Cross Street in Crossville. The deputy saw Gwaltney turn into the Maiers Grocery parking lot and then west on Main Street. The deputy knew Gwaltney was wanted on a White County warrant for Aggravated Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer (disobeyed two traffic control devices)/Driving While License Suspended.

The deputy got behind Gwaltney and activated his emergency lights to stop him. Gwaltney stopped on Elliott Street and West Main Street. The deputy asked for Gwaltney’s identification. Gwaltney provided his information. The deputy told Gwaltney that he knew he had a valid White County warrant.

At this point, the deputy checked Gwaltney’s identification with dispatch. Dispatch told the deputy Gwaltney was suspended and wanted on the warrant. The deputy then told dispatch that Gwaltney was in custody. Another deputy on scene searched Gwaltney and found nothing on him. Gwaltney was then placed in the patrol vehicle and taken to the White County Jail. He was released around 2:50 a.m. and was given a Notice to Appear for his first appearance in White County Court on May 7 at 9 a.m.
