One Appears in Court, Another Arrested in Connection with Recent Carbondale Home Invasion

MURPHYSBORO – A 32-year-old Carbondale man charged Friday in Jackson County Court to a reduced charge of robbery in connection with a reported incident Wednesday in Carbondale.

Marcus Matthews was originally charged with Class X home invasion and Class 1 armed robbery. However, on Wednesday the Class X charge was amended and reduced to Class 2 felony robbery.

Police say they responded to the scene at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday on a report of three men with guns forcing their way into a home.

Officers eventually learned that this incident stemmed from a dispute between acquaintances who knew each other.

One of the suspects forced in a door after a confrontation. One of the suspects also inferred that he possessed a weapon, but it has not been proven to be the case at this time.

The resident confronted the suspects who then fled the area. There were no injuries or property loss reported.

Officers located and arrested 32-year-old Marcus E. Matthews of Carbondale after he was identified as one of the suspects.

Matthews was charged with Attempted Home Invasion and Attempted Armed Robbery.

Carbondale Police announced Friday that they made another arrest in connection with the Oct. 25th home invasion in the 400 block of West Willow Street.

Police say detectives Friday identified 25-year-old Zecheriah C. Freeman of Carbondale as one of the suspects involved and arrested him without incident. Freeman was charged with Attempted Home Invasion and Attempted Robbery.

After consulting the Jackson County State’s Attorney, Freeman was lodged in the Jackson County Jail.

Carbondale Police say the investigation is active and ongoing.
